Bitly is a powerful tool used to shorten URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Bitly is a company based in New York City and was established in 2008. Bitly is used by many people to shorten links per month. These shortened URLs are randomly generated and usually consists of letters and numbers. Shortened URLs consists of very few characters and thereby are appropriate for using in Twitter and short messaging programs, which have a specified character limit.
In this post, I will show you how to use bitly to shorten your links. First of all, you need to go to the URL of the page you want to shorten and then copy the URL from your browser. You will then need to go to www.bitly.com to shorten it.
Steps to shorten URL through Bitly
You will see a white box at the top right corner, where you will need to paste the copied URL. You are required to click the orange “SHORTEN” button. You will then come across a web page that has the shortened link. You will then need to copy and paste this shortened link to any place where you want to use it, be it social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus etc.) or other channels. Whenever anyone will click on this shortened link, they will go directly to the original URL.
Although you can use bitly to create shortened links without creating an account, however, it is a good idea to sign up with bitly as it provides many other benefits e.g. tracking usage of the link, stats of your shortened URL, monitoring and measuring of links etc.
After creating a bitly account, you can visit the dashboard. In the dashboard, you will see all the shortened links (called bitlinks) you have created as shown below.
You can also click Stats button to see the stats of the various bitlinks as shown below. The stats will show how many clicks you have received with different time-frames and you can also see the results in pie chart form.
